We can't choose our family. If you're anything like me, you may often ask yourself: "Why has no one told me this before?". Causing you to wonder what your life would look like if you were born into a different family. A calmer family, a more emotionally mature family, or a more self-aware family.

I hold a lot of sadness over the things that didn't happen in my upbringing, not so much over the things that did happen. It's frustrating to come to find that there were massive "mistakes" in your upbringing that weren't your fault, but they are still your job to fix as an adult.

Amongst all of this anger, frustration, and sadness, I do find comfort in the fact that my family does the best they can and that I will not be perpetuating some of the patterns of their dysfunction. Here are 3 things I learned as an adult that would have made my life a lot easier if I were told them as a child:
